Princess Kawānanakoa Tomb Mauna Ala
Princess Abigail Kawānanakoa, often regarded as the "Last Hawaiian Princess," was born on April 23, 1926, and is remembered for her dedication to preserving Hawaiian culture and heritage. As a descendant of Hawaiʻi's last royal family, her lineage connected her directly to King David Kalākaua and Queen Kapiʻolani. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep sense of cultural duty, and she used her position and wealth as an heiress to champion various Native Hawaiian causes. Over her lifetime, she supported cultural organizations, donated to the restoration of ʻIolani Palace, and contributed to educational and health initiatives for Native Hawaiians.
Princess Kawānanakoa’s life was also marked by her role as an LGBTQ+ figure in Hawaiian royalty, marrying her partner Veronica Gail Worth in 2017. Her advocacy and philanthropy left a lasting impact on Hawaiʻi, particularly in her efforts to preserve its royal history.
After her passing in 2022, she was interred at Mauna ‘Ala, the Royal Mausoleum of Hawaiʻi, a sacred burial site for Hawaiian royalty. Her tomb at Mauna ‘Ala serves as a tribute to her legacy and a reminder of her contributions to the Hawaiian community and her dedication to preserving her heritage and family history.
